Astrological Keywords : Introduction

Imagine having more precise astrological points in a chart; imagine having very definite placements to refer to events both past and future! This is exactly what adding asteroids and the transneptunians do. Their meanings often parallel the exact wording you or a client uses to think of and describe experience. For this reason, they are easier to learn than beginning students think they will be.
So how can YOU get started?
First of all, remember that all the things you already know about signs, houses, aspects and planets in astrology will just be applied to the new points. All you have to do is learn the range of meanings of the additional points.
Take the bite you can chew. Maybe you have a brain that can easily tackle adding 60 or more factors to charts, but probably it will be easier to work with a few at a time. After you review the following list of TNPs and asteroids, pick four or five that feel really important to you. Jot down their key words and names; refer to the reference texts or to the glyph key on this site for their glyphs; and find where those four or five are in your chart and in the charts of a couple of people who have given you their permission to study their charts.
Take a copy of your chart (just as you usually use) and enter the asteroids you’ve chosen at the sign and degree of their place in your chart. Then write their key words beside them. Later, when you add more asteroids and TNPs, you’ll have a more complete picture of what your initial four or five asteroids are describing, but, at this early stage, work with the fragment of a story that they’re telling you. Sometimes it’s immediately apparent. Other times, it will take more information to make the story complete. There are a number of charts posted on this site under the seminar section; these too offer study examples.
Then repeat the exercise with those same asteroids in your other study charts. Please remember to approach the charts (lives) of others with respect and reverence. Asteroids can reveal very honest and very private information—and ethics require that when you ask to use someone’s chart for study that you tell them that. This applies to your chart too. Working with asteroids can graphically sketch parts of your past and Being, so you need to be kind and gentle with you (and with what you do and don’t want to know about who you are!)
In the beginning, your phrasing may feel stilted or awkward. Okay. As you work with the new points and gain experience in a variety of charts, you’ll be better at it. And it does take working with and studying actual charts. Surfing the Internet is no substitute! You will need to review enough charts to see the full repertoire of a point (as it aspects other factors in a chart) to develop confidence in the point—and in your ability to interpret it.
When you’re ready, review the list of key words again and select a couple more to add. Then proceed as you did with your first group. With some effort on your part, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’re “speaking the language” (and hearing asteroid key words whenever others open their mouths!)
Do you have to be an advanced level astrology student to do this? Definitely not. In fact, some who are virtually brand new to astrology find that adding the asteroids speeds their learning curve. The accuracy and detail of the asteroids also speeds that important, crucial step of Believing the Chart—trusting that what the symbology indicates has Truth (on more levels than most of us want to know!)
“But Wait,” you say. “How can a person use that many points with transits (and directions or progressions)?” Systems. Techniques. Information management. Later you’ll learn methods to find WHICH points are in high focus for a given time period, and it’s only those you’ll delineate.
For now, let’s get started! Read through the following list and find four or five (or six) “ideas” that seem especially relevant in your life….
