Formulas Without Math

A telephone call brought the question about “doing” formulas on the dial—“and was it true that they could be done WITHOUT doing any math?”  YES, it is true…and easier to illustrate than to explain over the phone!

Let’s imagine that we are using Clinton’s chart (August 19, 1946, 8:51 am CST, Hope, Arkansas, 93 w 36, 33 n 40) to inquire about certain relationship patterns.  In this way, formulas are used in a sort of “Horary” way.  We ask the formula to direct us to commentary on the issues posed.

Perhaps we want to ask: How are his relationships undermined by his sexual drives?  The phrasing of our inquiry contains a number of key words: How = Sphinx, Relationships = Juno, Undermined = Hades and his sexuality is shown by Eros.  The notation for the formula then would be:

Sphinx + Hades-Juno – Eros = (the result of the problem)

Even though the formula asks for the addition of the first terms (Sphinx + Hades-Juno,) and, in fact, when you actually do the math you would add them, to have the working dial do the math, begin by turning the aries point pointer of your working dial to THE M-I-D-P-O-I-N-T OF sPHINX AND (hADES-jUNO) AS SHOWN HERE:

WITH THE POINTER ON THE MIDPOINT, NOTICE THE DEGREE ON THE WORKING DIAL AT WHICH EROS OCCURS.  AS YOU CAN SEE, EROS IS 25 DEGREES FROM THE MIDPOINT. NOW SEE WHAT FACTOR(S) STAND AT 25 DEGREES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POINTER.  THE ANSWER TO THE FORMULA IS THE ASTEROID HEBE (EMPLOYEES, EXPECTATION OF EXCESSIVE TOLERANCE & SERVICE.)

At first, you will want to actually do the computations as proof of your work.  For instance, here:

Hades = 25 ^ 36 = 25:36 (in zodiacal notation and then in 90-dial notation:) = 25:36

Juno =  25 d 47 = 205:47 = 25:47

Sphinx = 18 ^ 54 = 18:54 = 18:54

Eros = 27 ` 34 = 87:34 = 87:34

Hebe = 17 _ 33 = 47:33 = 47:33

Thus:  The midpoint of Juno and Hades = 25:41 (115:41.) Adding that midpoint to Sphinx (18:54) = 44:35 (133:35), divided by 2 = 22:17 (66:17.)  So, the pointer is turned to 22:17 Cardinal.

Adding Sphinx and the Juno-Hades midpoint = 44:35 and in order to subtract eros, 90 degrees must be added.  44:35 + 90 = 134:35 minus the 87:34 of Eros = 47:01.  With Hebe in 47:33, it is well within orb as “the answer” (or completing factor.)

For a fuller delineation, include factors that occur in the axis of the formula’s result.  Here, the Hebe axis includes the asteroid Apollo.  That suggests that the sexuality that undermines a relationship, demeans a partner, and demands untoward tolerance of the behavior is (Apollo:) recurrent, provokes others, and is willing to go against the odds.

Note that we didn’t include the asteroid Tantalus (that occurs with Hades and Juno,) but, in delineation, we would—and it would add the idea of “testing whether others know” (and that is part of the denigration of partners/others,  part of the secrecy requested by Hades, and part of the “revenge” and score-keeping of Juno.  Juno can show as clothing—thus the Hades-Juno can manifest as “the dirtied dress”!)

The Witte text, “Rules for planetary pictures,” can be thought of as all formulas, but, you would want to extend those delineations, drawing on all you know of each component in the formula.  And of course, the excellent German work doesn’t include the use of asteroids.  My text, “The Orders of Light,” gives hundreds of examples of three (and more) part delineations, but, again, as your familiarity with asteroids increases, you can compose your own “formulas” and use the dial for “answers”—for extension of the ideas you have taken to the chart.  As you explore this technique, you will understand how to fill in interpretations by drawing on the essence of the component factors.  to compose your own formulas, “Listen” to your thoughts and see what key words are contained in those thoughts.  Then write the equation—and variations on that equation.  (Ie., where Jupiter + Saturn – Moon can indicate “Fortunate Separation from a woman” such as occurs at birth, apply also Saturn + Moon – Jupiter and Jupiter + Moon – Saturn.)  Use these techniques in both event work and for personal discovery.

Where you would want to use complex, multi-part formulas, such as:

(ASC/KRonos) + (Venus/Mars) – (Sun/Mars) = _______

You proceed in this way: First, using a rotating working dial, mark the indicated midpoints on the dial.  In the example here, the Asc/Kronos midpoint is in red, the Venus/Mars midpoint is in sky blue and the Sun/mars midpoint is marked in teal or turquoise blue.

as with other formulas, even though the notation and math call for addition of the first two terms, doing it on the dial means that you turn your working dial to—in this case, the midpoint (of the midpoint of the first two terms!)  That is shown here by the purple arrow and dot sequence.  That position represents the (As/KR) + (ve/ma) part of the equation.  a working dial would be turned to that position.  To subtract the sun/mars midpoint, the distance from that midpoint would be projected from (as/kr) + (ve/ma), and the answer or result would be the same number of degrees “on the other side” of the dial.  it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3—as per the illustration.  Once the result is obtained, the working dial would be turned to that answer (21 Leo) so that points in the axis would be incorporated.   That axis is shown above by the multicolored dots.

The axis of that formula, incidentally, often equals the sun (or other personal point) of the marriage partner.  Note that Hillary clinton’s sun in 02 Scorpio and her node in 23 taurus would be in orb for the formula’s result.  There are other formulas that also point to the sun of a partner.  (And if you haven’t worked with uranian astrology before, aren’t you now intrigued???)

While formulas whose results include a personal point are considered more salient and important, experiment!  And watch for formulas of transits that = radix or directed factors.

There may be no radix point to answer an equation; it awaits a transit or direction for activation.  Formulas can also be directed and varied.  ie., where jupiter + saturn – moon (fortunate separation from a woman) often targets the day or hour of birth, one would also work with variations such as Saturn + Moon – Jupiter.

Additional Resources: Dial techniques are covered in “Architects of Time.” There is a 2 tape (180 minutes) audio course (with workbook and dials) of instruction on 90* dial methods available, and also a monograph, “90 Dial Techniques Illustrated,” which covers the use of transits and directions with formulas.  Treehouse Mountain also sells a collection of eleven laminated dials (including the 60 and 45) with chart forms for $19.95 + S & H.  Methods such as sums, differences, midpoints and tree structures are included in all these sources. And we have printouts available of a number of formula categories for your chart (real estate, relationship, psychological-spiritual, etc.)  Please email for a catalogue of the categories and ordering information.
